Definition: Cooperative calligraphry is a craft of writing and drawing by two or more individuals using their own art and tools, often as a means of sharing ideas, creating community, or simply being a part of a group.
There are many types of co-op calligraphies, ranging from simple calligraphical to complex, collaborative, and more.
In 2017, we explored a few of the more common co-ops, including: The American Book Co-op (formerly the American Book Company) and The Cooperative Community of the San Francisco Bay Area, or Community Arts Co-Op.
In 2018, the American Business Network called Cooperative Arts Cooperative Co-OP a “new breed of cooperative,” describing it as a “co-op of artists, artists, makers and makers-in-residence.”
The co-operative movement is also growing in the U.S., with several co-operatives popping up recently, including The Cooperative Bookstore, the Cooperative Bookshop, The Cooperative Creative Arts Center, and the Cooperative Community of New York City.
Co-op artists often choose to co-opt other people’s art or use their own skills to make their own.
Co-ops are also gaining popularity in the arts world, with artists such as Wanda Jackson and the American Painters Guild creating their own co-branded studio.
The Co-operative Art Museum has recently been featured in a documentary called The Rise and Fall of Co-Ops.
As co-opers, we often create for our own needs.
Our vision for our co-opportunities is always to provide for each other and the environment, and to use our creativity and talent to create the kinds of spaces we want to visit.
As such, we are not afraid to use other artists’ or artisans’ work as our own.
We also create with others, even when it means that we can’t use it ourselves.
We are all creative beings.
The only thing we can do is make it our own, and that means our coops are the best place to learn how to do it and how to share our ideas and techniques with others.
What Co-operators Are Doing Now: Cooperators are often the backbone of creative projects, but they’re also working in many other areas.
While many co-oppers collaborate on their own projects, many others are partnering with other co-Op artists to bring them together.
In 2018, the American Book Coop and the Community Arts Cooperative opened a new, collaborative art studio.
And recently, a new cooperative called the Cooperative Creative Artists Cooperative was formed.
Here are a few examples of the types of collaborative artists who are coming together to create co-ordinated art.
